What Counts as a Business Day?
A business day is any weekday, Monday through Friday, that is not a public holiday. Banks, courts, government offices, and most employers run on this definition, which is why contracts, shipping estimates, and payment terms are written in business days instead of calendar days. When someone promises delivery in "5 business days," they mean 5 weekdays with holidays skipped, which usually spans 7 calendar days.
The formula is simple: business days = total calendar days - weekend days - holidays on weekdays. The calculator walks through all three steps and shows you the breakdown, including exactly which holidays were excluded from your range. If your workplace observes different holidays, uncheck the federal ones that do not apply and add your own dates one per line.
How to Count Business Days Between Two Dates
Take Monday, January 12 to Friday, January 30, 2026 as a worked example. First, count total calendar days: 19, with both endpoints included. Second, count the weekend days in that span: January 17 to 18 and January 24 to 25, which is 4 days. Third, check for federal holidays: Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, January 19, 2026, right inside the range. So 19 - 4 - 1 = 14 business days. One Monday holiday costs a full day from the count, which is exactly the kind of thing people miss when counting by hand.
The end-date toggle matters more than it looks. If January 30 is the deadline you must finish by, you have 13 full working days before it, so exclude the end date. If you are counting days you can work including that Friday, include it. Toggle the checkbox to match how your contract or project plan treats the final day. Once your dates are settled, our time card calculator can help you plan actual shift hours across those working days.
US Federal Holidays: The Ones That Shrink Your Count
The federal calendar has 11 holidays, and the calculator ships with all of them preloaded for 2025 through 2028, including observed dates. When a holiday lands on a Saturday, federal offices observe it on the preceding Friday; when it lands on a Sunday, they observe the following Monday. Independence Day 2026 is a good example: July 4 is a Saturday, so the observed holiday is Friday, July 3, and that Friday is the day excluded from your count.
Each holiday is individually toggleable in the list, which handles the two most common real-world cases: your company stays open on some federal holidays, or it closes for extra days like Christmas Eve that are not federal holidays at all. A holiday that falls on a weekend never double-counts, because weekends are already removed in step two. Planning a short pay period around the holidays? Our paycheck calculator shows how fewer working days affect that check.
Adding Business Days to a Date: Deadlines in Reverse
The second tab answers the reverse question: what date is N business days from today? This is how "net 30" payment terms, legal response deadlines, and shipping windows actually work. Thirty business days is not 30 calendar days; with weekends and the occasional holiday, it spans about 42 calendar days, roughly six weeks.
Enter your start date and the number of business days, pick forward or backward, and the calculator steps day by day, skipping weekends and your selected holidays. It also reports how many calendar days the span covered and how many weekend days were skipped, so you can sanity-check the result against your calendar. Backward mode is handy for counting back from a deadline to find the latest date you can start.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate business days between two dates?
Count all calendar days between the dates, then subtract weekend days and any public holidays that fall on weekdays. For example, Monday March 2 to Friday March 20, 2026 is 19 calendar days minus 4 weekend days = 15 business days, since no federal holidays fall in that range.
Are federal holidays counted as business days?
No. Federal holidays are not business days even when they fall on a weekday. The 11 US federal holidays include New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. When a holiday falls on a weekend, the observed weekday is treated as the non-business day.
How many business days are in a year?
A standard 365-day year has about 251 to 253 business days after removing 104 weekend days and roughly 9 to 11 federal holidays that land on weekdays. A leap year has about 252 to 254. The exact number shifts year to year because holidays move across weekdays.
Does the end date count as a business day?
It depends on your purpose. If the end date is a deadline you must finish work by, exclude it to count only full working days before it. If you are counting available working days including that day, include it. The calculator above lets you toggle this setting.
How do I add 30 business days to a date?
Step forward day by day, skipping Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, until you have counted 30 business days. Thirty business days spans about 42 calendar days, roughly six weeks. Use the add/subtract tab above to do it instantly with federal holidays excluded.
